Should you rent or buy a hospital bed?

Start with how long you expect to need it, then compare the complete cost. Renting can suit temporary recovery. Buying may make more sense for ongoing care. If you are unsure, ask us to compare both options for the same type of bed, mattress and rails.

Our Basic Hospital Bed Package rental page currently lists $290 per month. At that rate, three months of base rent is $870 and six months is $1,740. These examples are not a complete quote and exclude delivery, taxes and any separately charged services or accessories. Rates and availability should be confirmed before booking.

Questions to compare before renting or purchasing
Compare Renting Purchasing
Length of use Estimate the number of rental months and ask about extensions. Consider ongoing needs and whether the bed will continue to fit them.
What is included? Confirm the supplied frame, mattress and rails. Compare the exact package contents rather than the frame price alone.
Other costs Ask about delivery, collection, minimum term and return arrangements. Ask about delivery, setup, accessories and warranty terms.
Cost comparison Monthly rate × expected months, plus quoted extras. Complete purchase quote, including the items and services you need.

There is no single break-even month for every bed. Divide the comparable purchase cost by the monthly rental rate as a starting point, then account for differences in included items and services. See current hospital bed rentals or compare beds for purchase.

Comfort 36 or Comfort 42 Wide: what is different?

Compare the exact model, not width alone. The Comfort 36 collection uses the Drive Prime Care P503, while Comfort 42 Wide uses the Drive Prime Care P903. Their height ranges, sleeping-surface options and published weight limits differ.

Drive Prime Care model comparison
Feature Comfort 36: P503 Comfort 42 Wide: P903
Collection Comfort 36 Hospital Beds Comfort 42 Wide Hospital Beds
Published weight limits 450 lb total capacity; 425 lb resident weight. 600 lb published capacity; confirm the applicable resident limit and supplied configuration.
Sleeping-surface length options 76 or 80 inches. 80, 84 or 88 inches.
Width Standard-width Comfort 36 collection; confirm the matching mattress and deck dimensions. Integrated expansion to 36, 39 or 42 inches.
Deck height 7.8 to 30 inches. 7 to 30 inches.

Deck height is measured without the mattress. Total capacity is not automatically the maximum patient weight. Confirm the exact bed, mattress, accessories and user limit before ordering. A wider bed also needs more room, including space for the caregiver and transfers.

Manufacturer references: Drive P503 specification sheet and Drive P903 specification sheet. Specifications checked November 2, 2026; confirm the supplied model and current configuration.

How do you measure a room for a hospital bed?

Measure the bed's outside footprint and the delivery route, not just the mattress. A sleeping surface labeled 36 × 80 inches does not mean the complete bed has those outside dimensions.

  1. Record the delivery route. Measure clear doorway openings, hallway turns, stairways and elevators between the entrance and the room.
  2. Get the actual outside bed dimensions. Include headboard, footboard, rails and any extension in the selected setup.
  3. Plan working space. Identify where the caregiver will stand, where transfers will happen and where a wheelchair, walker or patient lift needs to move. Ask your care team about the clearance your equipment requires.
  4. Check nearby furniture and power. Keep access to doors and the outlet clear, and follow the bed manufacturer's electrical and placement instructions.
  5. Confirm delivery access. Share your measurements and any steps or tight turns with us before arranging delivery.

What should you ask during a showroom visit?

Bring your room measurements, a list of the equipment already used at home and any features recommended by your care team. Ask to compare the controls, height adjustment, mattress choices and the space needed for transfers. Before ordering, request a quote that names the bed model and lists the mattress, rails, accessories, delivery and setup.

Before you choose

  • Measure the doorway and the route into the room, including turns.
  • Compare sleeping-surface width with the bed’s overall outside dimensions.
  • Check the exact model’s weight capacity and what that limit includes.
  • Consider transfers, caregiver access and the bed’s height range.
  • Compare package contents, delivery arrangements and total rental or purchase cost.
