Sleeping With an Oxygen Concentrator- Doing It Right

Use oxygen during sleep only when it is prescribed for that use. Your clinician should confirm the delivery mode, flow and equipment needed overnight; a portable unit suitable while awake is not automatically suitable while sleeping.

Confirm the overnight prescription

Ask whether continuous flow or a particular pulse-dose system is appropriate during sleep. Pulse settings are not equivalent to liters per minute. Oxygen is not a self-selected replacement for prescribed CPAP or bilevel therapy.

Set up a clear bedside area

Follow the manufacturer’s required ventilation clearance. Place the unit on the approved stable surface, keep vents unobstructed and arrange tubing to reduce pulling and tripping. Use only the permitted tubing length and prescribed interface.

Prepare for alarms and power interruptions

Learn what each alarm means and how to contact the supplier. Keep the backup oxygen arrangement specified by your care team available. Do not simply disconnect prescribed oxygen for cleaning or an outage without the agreed alternative.

Address dryness with your provider

Ask whether humidification is appropriate and which bottle or accessory is compatible. Do not add water, oils or an unapproved humidifier to the equipment. Follow instructions for interface care and replacement.

Compare prescribed equipment

See stationary oxygen concentrators and oxygen rental options. Bring the overnight prescription when discussing equipment with MedEquip Shop.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sleep with any portable concentrator?

No. The exact device and delivery mode must support the prescribed overnight use.

Does oxygen replace CPAP?

Do not substitute oxygen for prescribed PAP. Your clinician decides which therapy or combination is appropriate.

What oxygen level should I aim for overnight?

Your treating clinician sets the target and monitoring plan for your condition.

Can I change the oxygen flow if I wake up breathless?

Follow your clinical action plan and seek medical advice. Do not self-select a new flow.

What should I do during a power outage?

Use the prescribed backup arrangement and contact the supplier or care team as instructed.
